News Blog Category - News With the upcoming solar eclipse sparking interest across the country, Marion High School’s state-of-the-art planetarium will put on special shows that explore the unusual phenomenon.

The public is invited to MHS to the shows, scheduled for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, and Sunday, Aug. 20. Admission is free, but seating is limited and on a first-come, first-seated basis on the day of the show. Doors will open about 30 minutes before each showing. Enter MHS through Door 22 at the front of the building. MHS is located at 250 W. 26th St.

This is a great opportunity for a special experience with the family, right here in Marion!

The planetarium at MHS was renovated in fall 2012. It boasts state-of-the-art LED cove lighting; 5.1 surround sound system with JBL cinema series speakers that push 2400 watts of power; a Digitarium Kappa projector that broadcasts full dome shows; and seating for 58.

Marion Community Schools is pleased to be able to present this special show to the public and share our exceptional facilities with the community in this way.

On the day of the eclipse, Monday, Aug. 21, MHS science teacher Tina Harris will be outside watching the eclipse with her classes, weather permitting. People are welcome to join the watch party! The eclipse should be visible in Marion from about 1 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 21.

News Blog Category - News Marion Community Schools is pleased to announce that Olivia Wright has accepted the administrative assignment as Director of Special Education for the 2017-18 school year.

Wright is a graduate of Marion High School and has worked for Marion Community Schools since 2001 — more than 16 years of successful experience as a teacher and a special education coordinator.

MCS Superintendent Brad Lindsay said he looks forward Wright stepping into this role and continuing to shape the department and provide opportunities for all MCS students.

“Olivia is passionately committed to our mission, which is to provide our best to the students, families, staff and community of Marion,” Lindsay said. “I look forward to the excellent leadership Olivia will provide Marion Community Schools as she begins her administrative assignment as our Director of Special Education.” 

Wright has been coordinator and assistant director for the MCS Special Education department since 2015. She steps into her new role of director following the departure of the previous director, Lisa Graham, who has accepted the role of executive director for the Grant County Special Education Cooperative, of which Marion Community Schools is a member.

The former director of the Co-Op, Lynn Gosser, has joined Marion Community Schools as director of exceptional learners. She will oversee ELL, alternative programs, high ability, and will also provide support to Special Services and secondary education, and more. That hiring was approved in June, with a start date to be official after the hiring of her successor. All three changes are now in effect.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to serve the students, families, and teachers of Marion Community Schools,” Wright said. “I am excited to continue to help students at Marion Community Schools grow and achieve in every way possible. I believe it is going to be the best year yet!”

Wright earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in special education from Indiana Wesleyan University, where she also later earned her master’s degree in education and her administrator’s license.

MCS congratulates Graham on her new role serving the Grant County community as a whole; she has served the schools, staff, families, and students well, and we will value our continued partnership with her through the GCSEC. MCS also welcomes Wright into her new role, and Gosser into hers, as we look forward to a great school year.

News Blog Category - News To try to decrease the traffic backups on the roads surrounding our school, Kendall Elementary has new procedures for those who drive their students to school.

Car traffic will now be behind the school, on the road that connects the Kendall and Justice campuses. (The drive at the front of the building will now be used for buses.)

PLEASE NOTE: The entrance to the Kendall Elementary dropoff / pickup line is now on Miller Avenue; it travels through the Justice Intermediate School parking lot and onto the road between the two schools, and the dropoff / pickup zone is behind Kendall Elementary. We also ask that you make a right turn only out of this drive when you leave, so that traffic continues to move smoothly, without large delays as people wait to turn. It may take you a block or two away from your usual route, but we believe it will speed up the dropoff / pickup process. 

Please review the map below (click for a larger version), to make sure you know where you need to be to drop off or pick up your student. In addition, please see below for information about car tags and other pickup procedures. We look forward to seeing you on the first day of school, Thursday, Aug. 10! It will take patience and teamwork during the transition period while we all get used to this new process, but we believe it will be worth it in the long run, as traffic delays are decreased!


Parents/guardians will receive “Authorized Car Pick-Up” tags from Kendall Elementary at the beginning of the school year. One tag needs to be visible in the car that is picking up your student(s) at the end of each school day in the dismissal zone. This tag is REQUIRED for car pickup.

Only those authorized to pick your student up from school should have these tags. If there is a change of plans with who is picking up your student, please write a note to your teacher and/or the office regarding the change.

When you arrive at Kendall, you will need to enter through the Justice Intermediate School parking lot on Miller Avenue. All traffic in the pickup lane is to remain single-file. DO NOT pull up beside other cars, unless directed to do so by a Kendall staffer! Also, remember: You MUST have your "Authorized Car Pick-up" tag displayed in your car to be able to pick up your student in this drive! If you do not have a tag, follow the procedures outlined below.

If at any time you lose your tag, please come to the office to get a new one. No altered tags will be accepted for dismissal.


Please also note that parents/guardians are not allowed to stand outside any doors to pick up their students. Instead, if you have a tag, please stay in your car and follow the dismissal process outlined above. If you do not have a tag, or prefer to walk up to pick up your student, you must park your vehicle (if applicable) in the parking lot (not in the pick-up drive!) and come to the school office. No walk-up pickups will be allowed outside the gym or any other external door. You must come to the office. Also note: When crossing the pickup drive in front of the school, you must use the marked crosswalk for office pickup.

If there is a change of plans with who is picking up your student, please write a note to your teacher and/or the office regarding the change.


Families with preschoolers at the Kendall Elementary building can park in the lot in front of Kendall and bring their children in. PLEASE be sure to use the marked crosswalk to cross the drive in front of the building, as that lane will be used for bus traffic this year.

If your student attends preschool at the Justice Intermediate building, you will continue to park along the safe zone outside of the doors on the north side of the Justice building, or in the nearby parking spots.

Kendall Kindergarten Family Kickoff

All of our incoming kindergartners and their families are invited to an event just for them!

Come out and learn about transportation, Kendall Family expectation, meet teachers and other staff, and more. You'll get important information and get connected with the Kendall family.

Childcare will be provided in the gym (ages 2 and older).

Doors open at 5:45 p.m., and the event will run from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Kendall Grades 1-4 Family Kickoff

All of our incoming first-graders through fourth-graders and their families are invited to come out and learn about transportation, Kendall Family expectation, meet teachers, and more.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m., and the event will run from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3.

Kendall Open House

All Kendall Elementary families (including preschool) are invited to our Back to School Open House!

We will be here from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, to meet our new families, and greet our returning families.

We hope to see all of our families here!

(School starts the following day, Aug. 10.)

News Blog Category - News All Kendall families are invited to Kendall Caring Family and Community Work Day on Saturday, July 15.

We are asking for volunteers to come in and help us work to make our school an even better place, from 2 to 5 p.m. that day. We will be pulling weeds, painting, landscaping, cleaning and beautifying the school grounds! Bring what you can: gloves, garbage bags, paintbrushes, shovels, rakes, brooms, leaf blowers (with extension cords if electric), ladders (8-10’ tall A-frame), trimmers, tools, etc.

Then, from 5 to 6 p.m., we will enjoy hot dogs and an ice cream social! Bring your own blankets and lawn chairs to relax!

This is also your chance to meet our new principal, Mrs. Trudy Grafton! (Click here to learn more about her.)

We are excited about the school year ahead, and we hope you are too. Together, we can make it a great year for all of our students and families!
